Popularity wise, Shopify is the clear leader, but WIX also comes up in the conversation, since over 68 million users are using the WIX platform. This does not mean that all WIX users are selling products or focusing on e-commerce

So let’s move on with an  in-depth comparison of Wix and Shopify.  and let’s look at their features, cost, and ease of use of Shopify vs Wix

What is Shopify?

Shopify is a true e-commerce platform that was made to help users easily build an online storefront.

Shopify allows users to organize their products, customize their storefront, accepts credit card payments, tracks and responds to orders — all with just a few clicks of the mouse. So, if you want an actual e-commerce platform, then you should try a 2 week Shopify trial. , the trial is mainly risk free and it gives you a very good feel of what it takes to build a solid ecommerce store.

What is Wix?

Wix is not an actual e-commerce platform. It is a cloud-based solution that allows users to create HTML5 websites using an easy-to-use drag and drop interface. While it is not an actual selling platform, it still does have e-commerce features for two of their plans.

Keep reading to find out whether Shopify or WIX is the right one for your online store business.

Basic Functionality – While both of them have some quality basic features, in terms of selling online, Shopify is the clear winner with good store management features and clean product pages.

Inventory management – WIX looks clean when it comes to inventory management. However, Shopify has it nicely organized all in one area. You’d be able to access the product creation page, inventory tab, and the gift cards creation options right from the same page.

Coupons & discount codes – Coupons and discount codes are both included without any extra charge from both Shopify and Wix. It’s kind of tough to determine which is better between these two since you can specify which products are available for discounts in both platforms and there isn’t much work involved for either.

Payment  Options – There are over  70 payment gateways available through Shopify which includes PayPal, Stripe,, and PayMill. When it comes to WIX, there’re only seven payment options including PayPal, WebMoney, Skrill, and Authorize.Net.

Themes – Since Shopify is targeted only towards e-commerce businesses, all the themes here are all built to cater to you. With WIX, there’re only a few online store themes available and they aren’t as pretty and impressive as there aren’t nearly as many to choose from.`

Apps and add-ons – When it comes to apps and add-ons, once again, Shopify is the clear winner. Yeah, the WIX app store is packed with cool integrations, but these are not all catered towards online stores. Meaning, you have to sift through the ones that are more useful for brick and mortar shops. Shopify, however, is the way to go if you’re looking for targeted apps.

Localization – WIX comes with a powerful multilingual app that can turn your site into any language you want. While in Shopify, only a few themes are designed to support two languages. WIX is the clear winner in this category.

SEO – SEO settings are incorporated into both Shopify and Wix, so it’s tough to find a winner in this category. Basically, you can let both of them automatically create metadata for you, or you may type it in yourself. Each of them pings the search engines when new content has been created.

Blogging – When it comes to blogging, even though I think Shopify has a cleaner CMS, both of them have integrated solutions for your blogging needs.

Customization options – Shopify has always been friendly to its users who want to implement their own CSS and HTML code. Yeah, the source code is not exactly or fully available for immediate download, but they have modules for them to include in their own code. WIX, on the other hand, is made primarily for basic users who do not have much design experience. This means that the themes for Wix are cookie-cutter and you shouldn’t expect too much from it in terms of customization.

Ease of Use

This is where it gets more interesting. WIX is absolutely built for non-developers or for basic webmasters who feel intimidated by messy interfaces and some coding responsibilities. WIX does provide useful themes or templates, add-ons, and a decent drag and drop user interface for making your pages look professional without coding required.

Ease Of Use

However, when we talk about “ease of use,” your site should also cater to developers or even people who want at least some basic customization options for their online store. Since Shopify can provide this, as it’s built mainly for online shops, Wix can’t beat it in terms of ease of use. Shopify allows you to upload products, manage inventory, and handle your customers easily. I agree, WIX seems to be pretty easy to use. But then again, it may be

Cost Wix

Cost Shopify

I know what you’re thinking. Yup, WIX pricing is more confusing than Shopify, but that shouldn’t make you rule it out.

Setup Fees – Neither Wix nor Shopify asks you pay any setup fees for your first online store or website.

Transaction Fees – No transaction fees for both Wix and Shopify. However, you will have to consider credit card processing fees. Since Shopify has over 70 payment options to choose from, you should be able to find a better deal with them.

Monthly Fees –Wix offers yearly plans for decreased pricing. However, this scheme prevents you from making upgrades or downgrades, and you’re stuck with just one platform for some time.

It’s also impossible to build an online store with WIX unless you choose the $19.90 per month e-commerce plan or the $29.90 per month (VIP plan).

The Lite Plan from Shopify costs $9 per month, while the Basic plan costs $29 per month. For me, the Shopify Starter plan is best for those who are getting started with their online store business, and since the Basic Shopify plan and eCommerce Wix plans have no setup, transaction fees, and allows you to upload unlimited products, Shopify is a better deal as it has more templates.

Bandwidth Charges – No bandwidth charges are implemented from either e-commerce platform providers.

Free Trial – Both Shopify and Wix offer a free 14 days trial, so if you’re still unsure which way to go, I’d strongly suggest that quickly open a free account with both platforms so you’ll see which UX you’ll like the most.

Which is the better option?

Wix seems to be a pleasant surprise. However, for me, it’s still quite difficult to recommend it over Shopify since the Shopify brand has been around for quite some time now and they are focused heavily on helping online stores. Themes are much better, and it’s rather simple for a first-time user to make a professional looking website on the Shopify platform. Not to mention, you’re not going to save more money by going with WIX.

The choice is really a no-brainer. Shopify is the clear winner as it is designed for people who want to sell and it has features in place to help you get more sales. Wix, on the other hand, is for people who want a website with some e-commerce features that they can build themselves.
